Found a new way to sweat...and I love it!

It's no secret I ran a lot of miles last year - training for two marathons will help with that feat.  I ran and I ran hurt - dumb.  But, earlier this year I sought help at TRIA.  It was determined I had a labral tear in my hip, we treated it with a cortisone injection in February.  I am happy to report that I have been virtually pain free since then.  I have laid off running for several months.

Here's the thing - I felt all inadequate this winter because I had gained a significant amount of weight back last year (despite training) and just felt defeated.  I took a significant amount of time off from running.  I ran a few miles here and there on the treadmill this winter - but not once did I venture outside like I did last year.  I was pretty faithfully going to the gym for awhile - doing the elliptical, rowing machine, stair climber, some free weights and core exercises.  It just wasn't cutting it.

I have not lost much weight over the last few months.  But, if I am being honest with myself, I haven't tried as hard as I could have.  I worked out but I also often used that as an excuse to eat stuff that I knew I shouldn't be eating to promote weight loss.

Back in November, I got a hair brained idea to join my step-mom Sue and my dad at this crazy boot class she had been going to for a few weeks.  They sponsored a workout on Thanksgiving day, you could come work out for free and bring food for the food shelf.  Sue had told me how much she loved it and I hadn't really done a whole lot of anything after the TC Marathon.  So, I threw caution to the wind and went with them.

That workout was the hardest thing I had ever done - seriously, I think the marathon was better.  They engaged every single muscle and worked us the entire time.  I almost got sick multiple times - literally had to stop and rest!  But, the best part, the best part was the people.  The other participants were great and the instructors and owners were awesome.  They took the time to meet me since I had never been there before and instantly found out we had lots of things in common.  I knew that I would go back at some point.  It was a great workout and they were really cool people too!

Fast forward two months - I get a text from Sue "Altman Fitness has a new groupon out!".  I debated back and forth because I was in the midst of my whole hip debacle and wasn't sure if I would even be able to do the workouts.  I decided to buy it - it was too good to pass up!

Fast forward another two months - I realize my super awesome groupon is getting close to expiring so I contact them and get my first workout scheduled.  I opted for the 5:45 AM class as that is what fits best in my schedule with work and the kids.

I went to my first class and was greeted by the trainer and given a quick run through of class, filled out some forms and made my way to the floor.  I will be honest, I didn't know what to expect, I just knew I didn't want to pass out, puke or have to quit.  My first class was great, it was tough, I didn't have to quit and I felt amazing after class.  I would have never pegged myself for a group workout class - but I fell in love!

Sweaty mess!
Over the next four weeks I went to class 16 times.  The last week I went several days in a row just because I didn't want to miss out on any of the fun!  Becoming a boot camp member takes a good investment so I wasn't sure I was going to be in a spot to dive in fully after my groupon was over.

Well, it turns out that I have found a way to become an official member at Altman Fitness Boot Camp and I could not be more excited about it.  I really feel like my time put in at the BC gym is so much more beneficial than the time I was putting in at Snap Fitness.  I just don't think I can push myself the same way that the trainers are able to push me at Altman.

I am thinking about having my body composition tested and tracking my progress over the next 60-90 days to see how things change once I am on a consistent schedule of workouts.  I will write about it here and give updates about boot camp and the other activities I will be doing.  I am going to keep running through the summer and fall - just not crazy mileage - I am going to run for the enjoyment of it.  Geez, who am I!

Be happy and healthy friends!
